Chapter Fourteen â Day Four
One of the figures, holding a silver device projecting 3-D holograms above it, points in our direction. The others turn and see us cowering in the trees. I try to hide behind a tree trunk, but they know weâre here.
âItâs okay, Ellie,â Mom says. âLook at their auras.â
âI see their auras, and theyâre not human. Arenât humans yellow?â
âLook again.â She moves toward the fence between the woods and the cemetery.
Bryan holds my hand and brings me back around the tree so we are facing the strangers standing thirty feet from us at the far edge of the cemetery. Most stare back at us, while some huddle, working on their futuristic-looking devices. Their auras are a light color, and I recall Momâs lesson on the lighter colors being the friendlier of the creatures.
Bryan keeps his narrowed eyes on them as he helps me through the wooden fence into the graveyard. We need to pass through the cemetery to get to town, and Mom acts as if they arenât a threat.
The graveyard is spooky at dusk. The gravestones nearest us are older, while the more modern stones lay on the other side of the street, where my father, grandmother and grandfather are buried. I thought the gravestone next to my father was my motherâs, but that was apparently a ruse. A tall oak grows in the center of the older section; I always admired the scenery when Iâd come with Grandpa to visit. I hadnât been here in five years, so Iâm sure their graves lie in disarray. The town mows the grass but it doesnât maintain the stones.
The strangers seem so out of place here among the old headstones and monuments. âWhat are they then?â I whisper to Mother.
She shrugs. âIâve never seen them before, but I donât think theyâre evil.â
âHow can you be sure? The lighter color?â
She nods. âThey arenât looking at us in a threatening manner. They are probably more afraid of us.â She motions with her head toward the group. âThe aura waves.â
I watch the blue auras dance around them. Theyâre nervous, I think, or at least their auras act that way. I nod at Mother. She taught me another thing about reading people I had not noticed before. Their actions and feelings affect their auras.
One of them steps away from the group, approaching us, acting as a buffer. Heâs pensive, yet nervous. âWe are leaving.â I donât recognize his accent. His voice shakes; perhaps as a warning or plea? He holds up his right hand and a shiny, silver bracelet blinks a white light across its surface. The gesture seems like a peace offering. Heâs telling us he does not pose a threat to us.
âWe are, too,â Bryan says, as he ushers me in the opposite direction. âWeâre not here for you.â
The man looks relieved and nods.
I stop. On the other side of him, the others stand in front of something.
âLook, itâs a portal.â I point and walk toward it. The man backs up a step.
